Hemorrhoids are extremely swollen veins in your anus and lower rectal area that are most similar to the varicose veins often seen in legs or arms. Hemorrhoids may be located on the inside of the rectum (internal) or they may occur under the skin around the anus (external). Though painful, hemorrhoids are quite common amongst adults.
